Today’s top stories: A new knowledge exchange platform for freelancers launches; media group Disney buys up social gaming leader Playdom; and Facebook trials a new Q&A feature.
Knowledge exchange for freelancers
The freelancer marketplace Freelancermap has launched a new service, Freelancer Wissen (tagline „Expert knowledge by freelancers for freelancers“). The site will primarily offer IT freelancers a forum in which to exchange knowledge on specialist topics. Users generate content – sharing their expertise – and are rewarded with „reputation and attention“.
Disney acquires Playdom
The media group Walt Disney has bought social gaming company Playdom. TechCrunch has reported that the purchase price was $563.2 million, in addition to an earn-out of up to £200m. After the last round of financing in June 2010, the company’s value stood at $345 million. Meanwhile, rival Zynga confirmed a $150 million investment by Softbank. A Google investment for the same amount is yet to be officially confirmed by Zynga.
Facebook as Q&A community
Facebook has made a first tentative step into search with the trial of Facebook Questions, which enables users to ask a question to the entire Facebook community. Selected users now have the option to ask a question from the Facebook homepage, or from their friends‘ profiles. If rolled out, such a feature will put Facebook in competition with sites such as Hiogi in Germany, Ask.com, or indeed, Google.
