Your work is to discover your work and then, with all your heart, to give yourself to it. - Buddha

About two years ago in October I was struck by lightning. It came over me like a flood of biblical proportions.

Up to that point I was living in the future. I was quite keenly aware that life is not at all endless, but I hesitated to draw the proper conclusions from it.

When I say, I was living in the future, I mean I was always making up plans and scheming on what my life would, should, or could be like, when just this or that event should occur. For instance, when I would just have landed the proper (means well paying) job or won the lottery, I would also commit to a fitness program.

In that instant though I realized, if I kept on like that, I might never reach my potential, I might never be fulfilled, I might never reach a state of happiness and I realized that my time on this earth was limited and that I had to use it more wisely. Of course, I had lead a good and interesting life up to that point (maybe someday I’ll tell you about the drunk guy with the shotgun or about being face-to-face with a rattlesnake out in the wild), but I was not yet ready to call it quits and settle in for the usual cycle of life or rather death consisting of birth, school, work, and finally death – racing to the finish (which for all of us ultimately is death) trying to avoid any bumps in the road, steering clear of risks, and patting oneself on the back on one’s deathbed for having lived an uneventful life.

So, that night, I went out, dressed like a clown (of course, I had no proper gear at that point) and ran my first rounds in over 10 years and I have kept it up, going out in any weather 2-3 times a week and it feels great. It’s not just the exercise and the health benefits from it, but also the understanding that lead to it and the learning experience I can draw from that.

In much the same way, I have started meditating and made other changes in my life. The biggest one is yet to come and I hope for your participation.

I am looking for co-founders and partners, not employees.

Somewhere in California is a company, whose name sounds like “X Dominator”. It may seem preposterous to mention the probably most elite and simply best incubator in the world in this regard, but if one wants to build a car, one does not take a Trabant but a Mercedes as a yardstick.

I have been fascinated by said company and the work they do ever since I saw a live-stream of their yearly “school” event a couple of years ago.

This has sparked something in me and lit a candle of passion much in the same sense, of what I was talking about above. But much in the same way, I was procrastinating, assuring myself I was not ready, the risk would be too great, there are already too many in this line of work, and many more reasons for holding off on doing it. Well, today that is over. Today is the day it all starts. There is no tomorrow. No more waiting, no more, no more …

I realize, by now everyone and their grandmother has their own incubator, but besides definitorial inconsistencies (which probably mostly originate in the unclear usage of the terms incubator, accelerator, company builder, venture capitalist, business angel) my vision of what an incubator or rather this incubator should be is quite varied from what is often times associated with the term.

In my view companies like the rocket-scientists (although I like their business model and see an economic relevance for it) and the big old-economy companies keeping their own little share of the incubator cake in order for easier access to new ideas, innovations, and prospective employees are in a different kind of business.

This prospective business shall then be driven not by money and greed, but by a true passion for building, for helping budding entrepreneurs along their way, for innovation, for simply making a mark in the world. If one can accomplish that, I guarantee the money will come.

I have also a hunch for a different approach for the collection of funds, but that is maybe a task for the future after the first steps have already been taken.

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

If you are still with me at this point, I can surmise that you are at least a little bit intrigued by what you have read so far. So, now it is time, I reveal some things about myself.

I am in my 30ties and have a quite varied background in academia and professionally as well as personally.

My expertise falls into the fields of controlling, finance, accounting, taxes, and corporate law. I have an understanding of management techniques, marketing, strategy planning and implementation and also lean start-up principles are no secret to me.

Although being a German native, I have received some schooling in the US as well as spending further time there for additional studies (a little redneckery has stuck), therefore I would deem my command of the English language as at least good, while it is excellent in German and at least basic in French.

I have worked in different positions in different companies (mostly small or mid-tier ones), completed some internships, founded a couple of companies, and participated (for at least a short while) in the odd internet start-up.

I possess good people skills, am flexible, approachable, lenient when possible, consequent when necessary, always trying to learn, and open to criticism.

Although using a quite anecdotal style, I am far from being a dreamer. In fact, you will be hard pressed to find a bigger sceptic.

If you get to know me, you will realize that I rarely do things without having a clear purpose in mind.

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

At this point, there is only question left …

Are you up for the challenge?

As stated before, I am not looking to hire anyone; I want partners and co-founders that share the vision that want to make the job and company theirs and that want to accompany me on this thrill ride.

At this point the qualifications that are sought are the usual top university, top grades, top consulting or big-four company work experience, investment banking background, no older than 30, but 15 years work experience, and a 10inch dick (for you continental Europeans that is 25,4cm).

Of course, if you can provide any of these experiences that would be a plus, but not a necessity. You will need to be flexible, but also disciplined, and be willing to try new things and embark un previously untraveled paths.

I am looking for makers and shapers, people with passion, character, personality, and the drive to succeed – it just needs to be a good match.

You can apply with any background – just please have one and let me know, where your expertise and passion lies.

If you should like to not be involved operationally, but rather as a consulting instance in the background, that will also be appreciated.

We shall also be glad about any other or further contributions.

Be aware, we will be embarking on untested waters and at this stage – well, I will not overwhelm you with what we don’t have – we do have passion, the planning has been in the making, and most importantly we do have the opportunity, but if you want to play it safe, this is probably not for you.

Today, we are at the beginning of a journey, a location has to be found (I don’t care whether it may turn out to be Hamburg, Berlin, Norderfriedrichskoog, London, Vienna, Geneva, somewhere in the UAE or if we start in your grandfather’s barn next to Elenor the cow), processes have to be established, a brand has to be created, operations have to be set up, many obstacles have to be overcome, and most likely a lot of resistance will have to be dealt with.

If this opportunity tickles your fancy, I would love to hear from you at: denominator2013@gmail.com

Of course, the email address is preliminary as well as the company name is still a placeholder.

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Yes, I could have kept this a lot shorter and provided bullet-points letting you just scan through the text, but I intentionally chose not to ;-)
